• 9,000 BTU: Small bedrooms, under 350 sq ft, well-insulated
• 12,000 BTU: Most bedrooms 350-500 sq ft (default pick)
• 18,000 BTU: Larger rooms 500-800 sq ft, or 12K rooms with vaulted ceilings or western sun
• 24,000 BTU: Great rooms or open floor plans 800-1,200 sq ft
• 36,000 BTU Multi-Zone: Whole-house, 2-4 indoor heads from one condenser

Which Mr Cool model — the matrix

Mr Cool DIY 4th Gen 12,000 BTU — most common

The default pick. 80% of my Mr Cool installs are this model. Handles most master bedrooms at 8-foot ceilings. Pre-charged, no EPA license needed for install.

Mr Cool DIY 4th Gen 24,000 BTU — for great rooms

For open floor plans up to 1,000 sq ft. Don't undersize this — heat rises in great rooms, and the upstairs always runs hotter. If you have a 900 sq ft great room with a vaulted ceiling, skip the 18K and go 24K.

Mr Cool DIY Hyper Heat 18,000 BTU — cold climates

If you're in the Pacific Northwest, the Sierras, or anywhere that hits 25°F overnight in winter, get the Hyper Heat variant. Heats down to -13°F. Regular Mr Cool struggles below freezing.

Mr Cool DIY 36K Multi-Zone — whole house

One outdoor condenser supports 2-4 indoor heads. For homes that need cooling in multiple rooms but don't want central HVAC. Premium install but premium result.

Mr Cool Easy Pro 18,000 BTU — semi-pro option

Better aesthetics than the DIY 4th Gen, needs slightly more install knowledge but homeowners can still do it with care. For homes where the unit will be visible and you want it to look intentional.

Mr Cool DIY Ceiling Cassette 12K — premium install

Ceiling mount instead of wall. Looks built-in. Costs more (you'll need to cut into the ceiling) but the finish is professional.

The accessories most people skip

Mr Cool Line Set Cover Kit

Hides the line set running down the side of your house. Without this, you've got a black tube and copper pipes visible from the curb. With it, looks like a real install.

25-foot line set extension

If the indoor and outdoor units are more than 16 feet apart (Mr Cool ships 16 ft standard). Pre-charged like the original.

Heavy-duty wall mounting bracket

For homes where you can't attach the outdoor unit to the wall. Use a freestanding bracket or pad.

Yes — the lines are pre-charged at the factory, so no EPA 608 certification is required. You will need an electrician for the 240V circuit (or an electrical permit if you DIY it).

How long does a Mr Cool install take?
