Safe, Efficient Space Heaters: What to Buy and How to Plug Them In

Every 1,500 watt plug-in heater turns electricity into the same amount of heat; no model is magically more efficient. What you are choosing is how the heat feels (oil-filled for quiet, steady bedroom heat, ceramic for fast heat, infrared for heating a person), the safety features (tip-over and overheat shutoff, a UL or ETL listing), and a thermostat that cycles it off. Plug it straight into a wall outlet, never a power strip or extension cord, and if the plug or outlet gets warm, stop using that outlet until it is fixed.
Why listen to us: Zomg The Handyman crews have done more than 10,000 jobs across all of California since 2009, and every winter the calls change: lights on rooflines in November, cold rooms and dead water heaters in December and January, then leaks, clogged gutters and drafty doors once the storms arrive. This guide is what our installers tell customers before they buy, so the thing you order is the thing that fits your house. We replace a lot of scorched outlets every winter, and almost all of them had a space heater plugged in.

Our Picks
Efficiency: The Truth Behind the Box Claims
A plug-in heater on a standard outlet is limited to about 1,500 watts, which is roughly 5,100 BTU per hour, and every electric resistance heater turns all of that into heat. "Energy saving" on the box means a thermostat that cycles the heater off, an eco mode that runs at lower power, or a timer. Those features do save money, because they cut the hours it runs.
Running cost is easy to work out: kilowatts x hours x your price per kWh. A 1.5 kW heater on high for 5 hours uses 7.5 kWh; multiply by the rate on your bill. California electricity is expensive, so heating one room you are in is sensible, and heating a whole house with plug-in heaters is not. For a room you use every day, a mini split heat pump makes about three times as much heat per kWh.
Safety Rules Our Crews Repeat Every Winter
Space heaters cause home fires every winter. These rules are the ones fire departments and manufacturers agree on.
- Plug it directly into a wall outlet. No power strips, no extension cords.
- Keep 3 feet clear in front and on the sides: beds, curtains, paper, laundry.
- Buy one with tip-over and overheat shutoff, listed by UL, ETL or CSA.
- Do not share the circuit with a microwave, hair dryer or another heater. One heater uses most of a 15 amp circuit.
- Turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep, unless it is a thermostat-controlled oil-filled model made for that.
- Have working smoke alarms, and a carbon monoxide alarm if the home has any gas appliance.
Warm Plug? Fix the Outlet
A heater pulls a lot of current for hours, and a worn outlet whose contacts no longer grip the plug tightly heats up. Signs: the plug is loose, the plug or faceplate feels warm, the outlet face is discolored, or you smell hot plastic. Stop using that outlet. Replacing it with a new, tight outlet is a short job, and it is the most common space heater call we get.

Book an Outlet Replacement →Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most energy efficient space heater?
All 1,500 watt electric heaters make the same heat per kWh. The efficient ones are the ones with a real thermostat, an eco mode and a timer, because they run fewer hours. For a room you heat daily, a mini split heat pump is far more efficient.
Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?
Only a heater designed for it, such as a thermostat-controlled oil-filled radiator with tip-over and overheat protection, plugged into the wall, 3 feet from bedding and curtains, with a working smoke alarm.
Can I plug a space heater into a power strip?
No. Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords are not built for the current a heater draws for hours.
Why is the outlet warm when my heater runs?
Usually the outlet is worn and no longer grips the plug tightly. Stop using it and have it replaced.
How much does it cost to run a space heater?
Multiply the heater's kilowatts by the hours it runs and your electricity price. A 1.5 kW heater on high for 5 hours uses 7.5 kWh.
