Garage Heater Buying Guide for California: Electric, Infrared or Mini Split

In most of California a garage needs heat for a few cold months and cooling for many hot ones, which is why a mini split heat pump is usually the best long-term buy for a garage gym, office or workshop. For heat only, a 240 volt hardwired electric heater sized at roughly 10 watts per square foot of an insulated garage is simple and quiet. Insulate the garage door and replace the bottom seal first, or the heater just warms the driveway. Propane heaters need fresh air and a CO alarm, and none belong in a closed garage with a car running.
Why listen to us: Zomg The Handyman crews have done more than 10,000 jobs across all of California since 2009, and every winter the calls change: lights on rooflines in November, cold rooms and dead water heaters in December and January, then leaks, clogged gutters and drafty doors once the storms arrive. This guide is what our installers tell customers before they buy, so the thing you order is the thing that fits your house. Garage gyms and home offices have changed what people ask us for; the garage used to be storage and now it needs to be comfortable.

Seal It Before You Heat It
Most California garages are uninsulated: stucco walls, an open rafter ceiling and a thin metal door with a cracked bottom seal. Put a heater in there and it runs all day. In order of payoff: the garage door bottom seal and side weatherstrip, a door insulation kit, then insulation in the ceiling if there is living space or attic above. Our weatherstripping guide covers the seal types.
The Electrical Part (Read Before You Buy)
- 240 volt heaters and mini splits need their own circuit from the panel, with the right breaker and wire size from the install manual. Look at your panel for two open spaces before you buy.
- Plug-in heaters should not share a garage circuit with a freezer, compressor or the door opener.
- Propane and kerosene heaters burn fuel in the room. Use only ones made for indoor use, open a window or door for fresh air, keep them away from gasoline and paint, and install a CO alarm.

What size heater do I need for a two-car garage?
For an insulated two-car garage of about 400 to 500 square feet, roughly 4,000 to 5,000 watts of electric heat or a 12,000 BTU mini split. An uninsulated garage needs more, or insulation first.
Is a mini split worth it for a garage in California?
Usually yes if you use the garage most days, because the same unit cools it through summer and makes about three times more heat per kWh than a resistance heater.
Can I use a propane heater in my garage?
Only a heater rated for indoor use, with fresh air, a CO alarm, and well away from gasoline, paint and solvents. Never with a car running.
Do garage door insulation kits work?
They make a noticeable difference on a single-layer metal door, in winter and especially in summer sun. Seal the bottom and sides at the same time.
How much does Zomg charge to install a mini split?
From $1,345.50 on our booking page; the final price depends on the number of indoor units.
