Weatherstripping and Door Sweeps: Stop Drafts and Rain at the Door

Find the leak before you buy: close the door on a dollar bill all the way around; where it slides out easily, the seal is not touching. Modern pre-hung doors take kerf-in weatherstrip that pushes into a slot in the jamb; older doors take V-strip or foam tape. For the bottom, a screw-on aluminum door sweep or door shoe outlasts any stick-on sweep. Sliding doors use pile weatherstrip sized by its height. Weatherstripping keeps out cold air, rain and wildfire smoke, and costs little.
Why listen to us: Zomg The Handyman crews have done more than 10,000 jobs across all of California since 2009, and every winter the calls change: lights on rooflines in November, cold rooms and dead water heaters in December and January, then leaks, clogged gutters and drafty doors once the storms arrive. This guide is what our installers tell customers before they buy, so the thing you order is the thing that fits your house. Drafty doors are one of the cheapest winter fixes we do, and one of the most often done wrong with the wrong product.

Our Picks
Find the Leak First
Three tests, ten minutes, no tools.
- Dollar bill test: close the door on a bill at several points along each side and the top. If it pulls out with no drag, the seal is not touching there.
- Daylight test: at night with a light on outside, or during the day with the room dark, look for light around the door.
- Smoke test: on a windy day, move a lit incense stick slowly around the frame and watch where the smoke moves.
- Check the strike: if the door rattles when latched, adjusting the strike plate can close the gap without new seals.
Match the Product to the Door
| Where | What to buy | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-hung door with a slot in the jamb | Kerf-in foam or silicone bulb | Stick-on foam over the old seal |
| Older wood door, no slot | V-strip or silicone bulb on a nailing flange | Thin foam tape (crushes in a season) |
| Bottom of a door | Screw-on sweep or door shoe | Self-adhesive sweeps on exterior doors |
| Sliding glass door | Pile weatherstrip, new rollers if it drags | Foam tape in the track |
| Garage door | Bottom seal sized to the retainer, side and top stop seal | Universal seals without checking the retainer |
| Storm or screen door | The maker's sweep and astragal | Generic sweeps on aluminum frames |
Why It Matters More in California Than You Think
California winters are mild, so drafts get ignored until the first storm drives rain under the door. The same gaps let in wildfire smoke in fall, dust in Santa Ana winds, and hot air in summer when you are paying to cool the house. A sealed door does all four jobs. If the door itself is warped or rotted at the bottom, no seal will fix it, and replacing the slab or the whole door is the honest answer.

Book Weather Stripping →Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best weatherstripping for an exterior door?
For a modern pre-hung door, kerf-in foam or silicone bulb weatherstrip that pushes into the slot in the jamb. For an older door without a slot, V-strip or a silicone bulb seal on a flange.
Are stick-on door sweeps any good?
They are fine for an interior door, but on an exterior door the adhesive lets go with sun, rain and foot traffic. A screw-on aluminum sweep lasts years.
How do I know which garage door bottom seal fits?
Measure the width of the door and look at the ends of the old seal: T-shaped ends slide into a retainer track, and the T width must match. Bring a piece of the old seal if you can.
Why does rain come in under my door?
A worn sweep, a threshold set too low, or a missing door shoe. Adjust the threshold if it has screws, then add a screw-on sweep or shoe.
How much does Zomg charge for weatherstripping?
Weather stripping is $117 on our booking page, and a full home weatherstrip is $256.50.
