TL;DR

In California the right gutter guard depends on what falls on your roof and what the roof is made of. Stainless micro-mesh stops pine needles and the small eucalyptus and oak debris that clog screens, and metal guards are the right call in wildfire areas. On tile roofs, use guards that mount to the gutter or fascia, never ones that slide under the roof edge. Clean the gutters before installing any guard, ideally before the first big storm, and measure your gutter width (most are 5 inch K-style).

Why listen to us: Zomg The Handyman crews have done more than 10,000 jobs across all of California since 2009, and every winter the calls change: lights on rooflines in November, cold rooms and dead water heaters in December and January, then leaks, clogged gutters and drafty doors once the storms arrive. This guide is what our installers tell customers before they buy, so the thing you order is the thing that fits your house. We clean and guard gutters all fall, and the gutters that overflow in the first storm almost always had a guard that did not fit the roof or the trees.

Our Picks

Stainless Steel Micro-Mesh Gutter Guard (5 inch)
Fine stainless mesh on an aluminum frame stops pine needles, seed pods and roof grit. It does not burn, which matters in wildfire areas. Raptor is a common DIY brand. Rinse the top with a hose once a year where needles pile up.

Best Budget Metal

Aluminum Perforated Gutter Guard Panels
Stops leaves and keeps out rodents and birds. Needles and small debris can still pass or lodge in the holes, so it suits broad-leaf trees better than pines.

Best for No Fasteners

Gutter Brush Guard
A bottle-brush that sits in the gutter. Easy to install and remove, decent with large leaves, poor with needles. Not our pick near wildfire fuel, since debris sits in the bristles.

Foam Gutter Inserts
Cheap and fast, but foam holds debris and seeds on top and can be combustible. We list it only so you know why we steer people away from it in most of California.

Tile Roofs, Fire Zones and Other California Details

  • Tile roofs. Many guards are designed to slide under the first row of shingles. Do not lift clay or concrete tile to do that; it cracks. Choose a guard that clips to the gutter lip and screws to the front edge or fascia.
  • Wildfire areas. Fire agencies advise keeping gutters free of dry debris and using noncombustible gutter covers. Choose metal guards, not plastic or foam, and still clear what piles on top.
  • No gutters at all. Many California homes have none. If water is pouring off one roof valley onto a walkway or the foundation, a short gutter section with a downspout fixes it; see our rain-season drainage guide.
  • Measure first. Most homes have 5 inch K-style gutters, some have 6 inch, and older homes may have half-round. Measure across the top opening.

Timing: Before the First Big Storm

Install guards on clean gutters. A guard on top of a gutter already full of decomposing leaves just hides the clog. The best window is after most leaves have dropped and before the heavy rain, which in much of California means late October through early December. Flush each downspout with a hose while you are up there; a clogged downspout overflows even with a perfect guard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gutter guard is best for pine needles?

Stainless steel micro-mesh. Needles slip through screens and get stuck in brushes and foam.

Can you put gutter guards on a tile roof?

Yes, using guards that attach to the gutter and fascia. Do not use guards that slide under the roof edge, because lifting tile cracks it.

Do I still need to clean gutters with guards?

Less often, but yes. Debris collects on top of the guard, especially needles, and downspouts still need a flush now and then.

Are gutter guards good in wildfire areas?

Metal guards that keep dry debris out of the gutter help, and fire agencies recommend noncombustible gutter covers. Avoid plastic and foam.

How much does Zomg charge to install gutter guards?

Gutter guard installation is $292.50 and gutter cleaning is $175.50 on our booking page.
