TL;DR

A heated bidet seat is the bathroom upgrade people thank us for most in January, but it needs a GFCI outlet within reach of its cord, and most toilets do not have one. Instant-heat bidet seats never run out of warm water; tank-heated ones are cheaper. Plug-in towel warmers need no wiring; hardwired ones look cleaner. A heater fan replaces a ceiling exhaust fan but usually needs its own circuit. Zomg installs bidet seats from $148.50.

Why listen to us: Zomg The Handyman crews have done more than 10,000 jobs across all of California since 2009, and every winter the calls change: lights on rooflines in November, cold rooms and dead water heaters in December and January, then leaks, clogged gutters and drafty doors once the storms arrive. This guide is what our installers tell customers before they buy, so the thing you order is the thing that fits your house. Most bidet seat installs we do are simple; the ones that go long are the ones with no outlet near the toilet.

The Outlet Problem (Read This First)

Electric bidet seats and plug-in towel warmers need a grounded, GFCI-protected outlet within reach of their cord, and most bathrooms only have one by the sink. An extension cord across a wet floor is the wrong answer. Look at the wall beside the toilet: if there is no outlet there, plan to add one when you install the seat. That single item is the difference between a short install and a second visit.

Measure Before You Order

These decide what fits.

  • Bowl shape: elongated (oval) or round. Measure from the bolt holes to the front edge: about 18.5 inches is elongated, about 16.5 is round.
  • One-piece and skirted toilets: check the seat's compatibility list; some have a tank shape that blocks the bidet body.
  • Distance from the toilet to the nearest outlet, and which side the cord exits.
  • The water supply valve under the tank: an old multi-turn valve that will not close fully should be replaced first.
  • For towel warmers: the stud location and the distance from shower spray.

Ones listed for bathroom use are, when mounted away from the shower spray and plugged into a GFCI outlet, or hardwired by someone qualified.
