TL;DR

Manual louvers are reliable. Motorized are convenient. We install both. Real comparison plus what we'd buy.

PURPLE LEAF makes both manual and motorized aluminum louvered pergolas. Manual is cheaper and more reliable. Motorized adds convenience but introduces a motor that can fail.

Manual Pros

$1,000-$1,400 cheaper. No motor to fail. No electrical install. Reliable for 20+ years.

Motorized Pros

Convenient open/close. Some include rain sensors that auto-close. LED lighting integrated.

What We'd Buy

If your pergola is more than 12 ft from your back door, motorized is worth it. Otherwise manual — the rod takes 30 seconds and saves $1,500.
