Best Large Ceiling Fans, 60 to 84 Inch (2026): Great Room and High Ceiling Picks From the Install Crews
A 52 inch fan in a 20 by 24 great room moves air in the middle and nowhere else. Rooms over 350 square feet want 60 inches or more, and vaulted ceilings need the right downrod to get the blades down to where people are. These are the big fans our crews hang most, how to size the fan and the downrod, and the box and wiring checks that decide whether it is a $230 install or a bigger job.
Ceiling fan installation is $230 in our price book and the large fans are the ones where the prep matters. The fan is heavy, the ceiling is high, and the existing box is usually rated for a light fixture, not a 40 lb fan on a 4 ft downrod. Here is what we hang and what we check before the ladder comes off the truck.

Our Picks
Sizing the Fan to the Room
- Up to 144 sq ft (12x12 bedroom): 42 to 48 inches
- 144 to 225 sq ft: 52 inches
- 225 to 400 sq ft: 56 to 65 inches
- Over 400 sq ft (great rooms, open kitchen-living plans): 65 to 84 inches, or two 52 inch fans spaced over the two seating areas
In an open plan, two medium fans usually beat one giant fan, because people sit in two places. One 84 inch fan is for a single big volume: a vaulted great room, a covered outdoor kitchen, a barn-style garage.
Measure and Check Before You Buy
- Ceiling height and downrod. Blades should sit 8 to 9 ft off the floor, and at least 7. Rough downrod lengths: 9 ft ceiling, 6 inch rod; 10 ft, 12 inch; 12 ft, 24 inch; 14 ft, 36 inch; 16 ft, 48 inch. Most fans ship with a 6 inch rod. Buy the longer one with the fan.
- Slope. Vaulted ceilings need a sloped-ceiling adapter if the pitch is past what the canopy allows, usually about 20 degrees. Check the fan's spec sheet.
- The box. A fan can only hang from a box listed for fan support. Standard boxes marked for fans carry up to 35 lb; a fan heavier than 35 lb needs a box listed for that weight and support independent of the box. Many large DC fans are 30 to 45 lb before the downrod. If there is only a light fixture box up there, it gets replaced, and on a 14 ft ceiling that means attic access or opening the drywall.
- Wiring and control. DC fans come with a remote and need one hot, one neutral and ground at the box. If the existing switch loop has no neutral at the ceiling (rare) or you want a wall control, that is an electrician conversation.
- Blade clearance. 18 inches from any wall or sloped ceiling to the blade tip. Measure the room, not the floor plan.
- Damp or wet rating for anything outdoors or in a bathroom.
Install Difficulty, From the Crew
A 60 inch fan on a 9 or 10 ft ceiling with a fan-rated box already in place is a one-hour job. The same fan on a 14 ft vaulted ceiling with a light fixture box is a different afternoon: a 12 ft ladder or a scaffold, a fan-rated brace box, a sloped-ceiling adapter, a 36 inch downrod, and two people to lift and hold the motor while it is wired. Eight- and nine-blade fans also take a while to balance.
Ceiling fan installation is $230 in our price book with a fan-rated box in place and a ceiling under 10 ft. High ceilings, box replacement and outdoor installs are quoted from photos. New circuits are done by a licensed electrician we coordinate. See ceiling fan installation, book online, or send a quote request with photos.
DC or AC Motor
Every premium large fan is DC: quieter, more speeds, less power, and lighter for the same airflow. AC fans cost less and work with existing wall controls. For a fan this size, go DC and keep the remote where you can find it.

Book Ceiling Fan Installation →Frequently Asked Questions
What size ceiling fan for a 20 by 20 room?
400 square feet is the top of the 56 to 65 inch range. If the room is open to a kitchen, 65 inches or two 52 inch fans.
What downrod do I need for a 12 foot ceiling?
About 24 inches, to bring the blades to 8 or 9 feet off the floor. Buy it with the fan; most ship with a 6 inch rod.
Can my existing light fixture box hold a large fan?
Only if it is listed for fan support, and fans over 35 lb need a box listed for the weight. A plain light box has to be replaced, which is the most common extra on large fan installs.
How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan?
$230 in our price book with a fan-rated box in place and a ceiling under 10 feet. High ceilings and box replacement are quoted.
Is a bigger fan louder?
Usually the opposite. Large DC fans move the same air at a lower speed than a small fan on high, and are quieter doing it.
