Ceiling Fan Installation 2026: Brands We Trust, Wobble Fixes, and Fan-Rated Boxes
Hunter Dempsey or Minka-Aire are the only brands we recommend. Most existing ceiling boxes are NOT fan-rated and need a retrofit brace. Wobbling fans get fixed in 10 minutes with a balancing kit. Outdoor fans must be damp- or wet-rated.
California ceiling fan demand spikes May through October, and so do service calls about fans that wobble, hum, or never moved enough air. Here is everything we wish customers knew before they bought a fan on Amazon.
The Two Brands We Recommend
Hunter and Minka-Aire are the two we trust. Hunter is the workhorse: 40+ years of refinement, quiet, fairly priced. Minka-Aire is the upgrade: DC motors, gorgeous designs, lowest-noise.
Avoid: cheap big-box fans under $100. They wobble, hum, and the motors die in 3-5 years.
You Probably Need a Fan-Rated Ceiling Box
Most existing ceiling boxes are rated for a 5-10 lb light fixture, not a 30 lb fan with rotating mass. If you install a fan on a non-fan-rated box, the box can pull out of the ceiling.
The retrofit Saf-T-Brace lets you upgrade without cutting drywall. Snake it through the existing hole, expand the brace to grip the joists, screw the new fan-rated box to the brace. 20 minutes, lifetime fix.
Fan Wobble: A 10-Minute Fix
If your fan wobbles, it is almost always one or two blades being heavier than the others. A balancing kit finds the heavy blade in 5 minutes:
- Clip the balance clip to the middle of one blade. Run the fan. Note the wobble.
- Move the clip to the next blade. Run the fan. Note again.
- The blade where wobble is worst is the heavy one. Add a stick-on weight on the opposite blade.
Outdoor Fans: Get the Right Rating
Damp-rated for covered patios out of direct rain. Wet-rated for exposed locations like uncovered patios. Indoor fans rust and short out outdoors.
Fan Direction You Probably Have Wrong
Summer: counterclockwise (looking up) to push air down. Winter: clockwise to pull air up and circulate warm air at the ceiling. The reverse switch is on the side of the motor housing.
