Tile & Flooring 2026 — Backsplash, Shower Tile, LVP & Why Waterproofing Matters
Schluter waterproofing membranes (DITRA for floors, KERDI for showers) are non-negotiable on wet areas. Modified thinset for floors, unmodified over Schluter. Sanded grout for joints over 1/8". Seal grout 72 hours after grouting. LVP is the right floor for kitchens and bathrooms.
Tile is the most unforgiving surface in your house. Done right, it lasts 30+ years. Done wrong, you get cracked grout in year one, mildewing showers in year two, and full failure by year five. The difference is almost always waterproofing and substrate prep.
Tile Cutter — Snap Cutters for Most Jobs
For straight cuts on porcelain and ceramic, a manual snap cutter (RUBI, QEP) gives a cleaner edge than a wet saw and does not throw water everywhere.
Schluter Membranes — Non-Negotiable for Wet Areas
The single biggest difference between DIY tile and pro tile: waterproofing. Schluter DITRA goes under floor tile. Schluter KERDI lines shower walls and floors. Skip these and water finds its way through grout to the substrate.
Yes, it costs $2-$3 per square foot extra. Yes, it adds a half-day of work. No, you cannot skip it on a shower or kitchen floor.
The Thinset and Grout That Last
Use modified thinset (polymer-modified) for floor tile. Use unmodified thinset over Schluter membranes. For grout joints over 1/8", use sanded grout. Under 1/8", unsanded.
Seal the Grout — The Mistake Most People Make
Cement-based grout is porous. Water, soap, oils, and dirt soak in over time. A penetrating grout sealer applied 72 hours after grouting (and re-applied every 12 months) keeps grout looking new.
LVP and Laminate — Waterproof, Forgiving, Fast
LifeProof luxury vinyl plank is the floor we recommend for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. 100% waterproof, click-lock, soft underfoot, looks like wood.
Avoid: budget LVP from random brands. The locking mechanism fails, the wear layer scratches, and they fade in sunlight.
Backsplash — Where to Save and Where to Spend
Save on subway tile (no one sees the difference between $2 and $8 white subway). Spend on natural stone, glass mosaic sheets, and accent tile. Layout matters more than the tile itself — start from the focal point, not the corner.
