TL;DR

Mesh tape: self-adhesive, easier to apply, weaker bond. Paper tape: stronger bond, requires mud-tape-mud cycle. Pros use paper for joints; mesh for patches.

Drywall tape choice is one of the most-debated topics in DIY home repair. Both work; both fail when used wrong. The right answer depends on what you're taping.

How Each Works

Paper tape: applied over a layer of mud, pressed in, more mud over top. The mud penetrates the paper fibers and bonds the joint together. Stronger bond, but requires the right technique.

Mesh tape: self-adhesive fiberglass mesh. Sticks directly to drywall surface. Mud goes over the mesh. Easier to apply (no embedding step) but weaker bond — the mud doesn't penetrate the mesh, just locks around it.

Where Paper Wins

Long joints — wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-wall, butt joints. Paper tape's stronger bond resists cracking from house movement. Pros use paper exclusively for these joints.

Inside corners — paper tape pre-creased down the middle handles the corner cleanly. Mesh tape doesn't fold cleanly.

Where Mesh Wins

Small patch repairs (under 6"). The self-adhesive lets you skip the embedding step entirely — stick mesh over the hole, mud over top, sand smooth.

Crack repairs in plaster — mesh's flexibility moves with the crack better than paper.

DIY users — significantly more forgiving. The embedding step is where paper-tape DIY jobs fail.

Decision Guide

  • New drywall installation: paper tape for joints, mesh for any patches.
  • Patch repair: mesh tape always. Easier, faster, plenty strong.
  • Crack repair: mesh tape (flexes with crack).
  • Inside corners: paper tape (pre-creased).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mesh tape strong enough for joints?

For most residential joints: yes if used with all-purpose mud. For high-stress joints (long ceiling joints): paper is better.

Why do pros prefer paper?

Stronger bond, smoother finish on long joints. Once you can embed paper tape correctly, it's better.

Can I use mesh in corners?

Inside corners: no — paper folds cleanly, mesh doesn't. Outside corners: use a metal corner bead.

What if mesh tape shows through paint?

Apply more mud and feather wider. Mesh shows through if mud coat is too thin.

Does tape choice affect the cost?

Negligible. Pro labor is the cost; tape choice is pennies.
