TL;DR

Touchless faucets use a wave or motion sensor to start water. Two leaders: Moen MotionSense Wave (most reliable) and Delta Touch2O (touch-activated, slightly different category).

Touchless faucets hit mainstream pricing in 2024-25, and they earn their keep in any kitchen where you're handling raw meat, sticky dough, or muddy garden tools. Wave a hand, water on. The two technologies (true touchless and touch-activated) work differently. Pick by how you cook.

Touchless vs Touch-Activated

Touchless (Moen MotionSense Wave): motion sensor under the spout. Wave hand within 3-4 inches to turn on/off. Genuinely hands-free.

Touch-activated (Delta Touch2O): tap anywhere on the spout/handle to start. Requires touching with elbow/wrist if hands are dirty.

For raw-meat cooking, touchless wins. For everything else, both work. Touch-activated is slightly more reliable with no false triggers from steam or moving hands.

Battery vs Hardwired

Most touchless faucets ship with a 6-AA battery pack that lasts 1-2 years. Some can be hardwired with an optional AC adapter (sold separately, $30-50). Hardwired = no battery worry; battery = no outlet under sink needed. Most installs we do stick with battery; the under-sink outlet usually doesn't exist anyway.

False Triggers and Reliability

The MotionSense Wave sensor sees about 4" out from spout, not so wide that ambient kitchen movement triggers it. Older touchless faucets (pre-2020) had wider sensors and constantly false-triggered. Modern ones are reliable.

Delta Touch2O's main reliability issue is mineral buildup on the touch sensor. Clean monthly with a soft cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are touchless faucets reliable?

Modern ones (post-2020): yes. The Moen MotionSense Wave we install daily holds up under heavy kitchen use.

How long do batteries last?

1-2 years on 6 AA batteries with average household use. Replace when faucet starts taking 2-3 attempts.

Can it be hardwired?

Yes, Moen and Delta both sell AC adapters as $30-50 add-ons. Requires under-sink outlet.

Will steam set off the sensor?

Modern sensors (4" detection range) don't false-trigger on steam. Older units did.

What if power goes out?

Touchless faucets keep an emergency manual handle. Push the handle the old-fashioned way.
