Best Whole House Water Filtration Systems (2026): Sediment and Carbon Systems We Install on California Mains
A whole-house filter sits on the main line after the meter and treats every tap, shower and appliance. Three-stage sediment and carbon systems handle what most of California needs: chlorine and chloramine taste, sediment from old mains, and the grit that kills faucet cartridges. These are the systems our crews install, how to check your main before buying, and what the install involves.
We install Waterdrop systems as a listed service, starting at $325, and whole-house manifolds are the bigger version of that job. The filter is simple. The main line is where the surprises are: a 3/4 inch copper main from 1962, no shutoff that actually closes, and a water heater closet with six inches of room. This guide is about buying the right system for the water and the space you have.

What a Whole-House Filter Does and Does Not Do
Does: remove sediment, rust and grit; remove chlorine and chloramine taste and smell with carbon; protect every faucet cartridge, ice maker and shower valve in the house.
Does not: soften hard water (that is a softener or conditioner, a separate unit), remove dissolved minerals, lead or fluoride (that is a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink). Most California homes that want both end up with a whole-house sediment and carbon system plus an under-sink RO for drinking water. We install both.
Measure and Check Before You Buy
- Main line size. Measure the pipe outside diameter after the meter. Roughly 7/8 inch outside is a 3/4 inch main; 1 1/8 inch outside is a 1 inch main. Buy a system with matching ports or plan on reducers, which cost flow.
- Where it will mount. After the meter and the main shutoff, before the water heater, indoors or in a garage. You need about 30 inches of height for 20 inch housings plus 6 inches below to drop the sumps for filter changes, and a wall that can take a bracket with 40 to 60 lb of wet housings on it.
- A shutoff that works. Test the main shutoff before install day. Old gate valves often will not close fully, and the install cannot start until the water does.
- Bypass. Plan a bypass loop with three ball valves so the house has water during filter changes. Every system we install gets one.
- Pressure. Check house pressure with a hose-bib gauge. Over 80 PSI needs a pressure reducing valve ahead of the filter or the housings will crack over time.
- Flow. Match the system's GPM to the house. A 3 to 4 bath home wants 15 GPM or more so showers do not drop when the washer runs.
- Permit. Some California jurisdictions treat a whole-house treatment system as a plumbing permit item. Ask your city before the system ships.
Install Difficulty, From the Crew
With a good shutoff, an accessible 3/4 or 1 inch main and a wall to mount on, a three-housing system with a bypass is a two to three hour job: cut the main, build the bypass with ball valves, mount the bracket, plumb in with PEX or push-fit, flush the carbon, check for leaks. The jobs that run long are buried mains, a main inside a finished wall, galvanized pipe that crumbles when cut, and no shutoff at the house.
Waterdrop installs start at $325 in our price book; whole-house manifolds are quoted after photos of the main and the space. Relocating a main or adding a pressure reducing valve is licensed plumber work we can coordinate. See Waterdrop installation, book online, or send a quote request with photos.
Filter Changes and Running Cost
Sediment cartridges go every 3 to 6 months in older neighborhoods, carbon every 6 to 12. Buy the replacement set when you buy the system so the first change does not wait on shipping. Tank-style systems like the Rhino trade a higher price for years between media changes.

Does a whole-house filter soften water?
No. Sediment and carbon systems remove grit and chlorine taste. Hardness needs a softener or conditioner, which is a separate unit that can sit next to the filter.
Where does a whole-house filter go?
On the main after the meter and shutoff, before the water heater. Garage or utility wall, with room below the housings to change filters.
Do I need a 3/4 or 1 inch system?
Match the main. Most California homes are 3/4 inch; larger and newer homes are 1 inch. A 1 inch system on a 3/4 main works with reducers.
How much does installation cost?
Waterdrop installs start at $325 in our price book. Whole-house manifolds with a bypass are quoted after photos of the main.
Can a handyman install a whole-house water filter in California?
Yes when the main is accessible and no relocation is needed. Moving the main, adding a pressure reducing valve or permit work goes to a licensed plumber.
