TL;DR

A whole-house dehumidifier ties into the return duct and holds the whole home at 50% RH regardless of what the AC is doing. Worth it for coastal homes that run 65%+ indoors in the marine-layer months. 70-120 pint AHAM ducted units, $1,300-$2,500 installed. Picks and sizing below.

Air conditioning dries air as a side effect of cooling it. In Fresno that is enough. In Santa Cruz, Pacifica, Ventura or anywhere the fog sits until noon and the AC never runs, indoor humidity climbs to 65-70% for months and nothing in the house is drying it. Windows sweat, closets smell, and the house feels colder than the thermostat says. A ducted whole-house unit fixes that for the whole home from one spot.

Who Actually Needs One

Check a hygrometer in the hallway for a week. If it reads 60%+ most days, a whole-house unit is justified. If it reads 45-55%, you do not need one; the problem is a crawl space or a bathroom fan, and those are cheaper fixes. Coastal, hillside and fog-belt homes are the usual candidates. Central Valley and inland desert homes almost never are.

How a Ducted Unit Works

The dehumidifier sits in the attic, garage, or a closet next to the air handler. It pulls air from the return duct (or a dedicated grille), dries it, and pushes it back into the supply. It runs on its own humidistat, so it works whether or not the AC is on. Water goes down a condensate line like the AC's, usually sharing the same drain.

The install needs 8-inch flex duct on both ends, a 115V outlet, a drain, and a spot with service clearance. Attic installs need a drain pan under the unit, same as an air handler.

Sizing

  • Up to 2,000 sq ft: 70 pint AHAM
  • 2,000-3,000 sq ft: 90-100 pint AHAM
  • 3,000-4,500 sq ft: 120-130 pint AHAM

These assume normal construction. A leaky older home on the coast goes up one size. A sealed newer home with good windows can go down one.

Ducted vs Just Buying Two Room Units

Two 50-pint room units cost $600 and dry two rooms while adding heat and noise to both. A ducted unit costs $1,300-$2,500 installed, is silent from the living space, dries every room, and lasts 10-15 years. For a house that is genuinely humid, the ducted unit is cheaper per year and the only one that fixes the closets and bathrooms.

Install Pricing

  • Set unit, duct to existing return and supply, drain, outlet present: $649-$999 labor
  • Add dedicated return grille and duct run: $299-$599
  • Drain pan and float switch (attic): $149-$249
  • New 115V outlet by electrician: $199-$349

All-in with the unit: $1,300-$2,500 for most homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a whole-house dehumidifier work with a heat pump or mini split?

Yes. It only needs a duct system to tie into. With ductless mini splits, install it as a stand-alone unit with its own grille in a central hallway.

How much does a whole-house dehumidifier cost installed?

$1,300-$2,500 in California, unit included, for a 70-100 pint ducted unit.

Will it make the house warmer?

Slightly. The heat of removal goes into the supply air. On the coast that is usually welcome.

How long do they last?

10-15 years for Aprilaire, Santa Fe and AlorAir ducted units. Room units last 3-5.

Can a handyman install one?

The duct, drain and mounting are handyman scope. A new circuit needs an electrician. We coordinate both.
