TL;DR

A portable garage is a fabric-covered steel frame with walls and a door. It costs a tenth of a built garage, needs no permit under 120 square feet in most of California, and lasts five to ten years when the frame is 2 inch steel and the cover is PVC. ShelterLogic Garage-in-a-Box is the reference. Picks and setup pricing below.

The portable garage market splits into two products that look the same online: a $400 round-top tent with a 1-3/8 inch frame that lasts two seasons, and a $1,200 peak-roof shelter with a 2 inch frame and a 21 oz cover that lasts a decade. The listing photos are identical. The frame tube diameter, cover weight and door style tell them apart, and this guide reads those specs for you.

Who a Portable Garage Is For

A car or truck that lives outside, a boat on a trailer, a side-by-side, or a workshop overflow that needs walls and a door rather than a shed's shelf space. It is not a substitute for a shed if you want organized storage, and it is not a substitute for a garage if you need power and a concrete floor. It is the right answer when the goal is a dry, shaded, out-of-sight enclosure this weekend.

Wind and Sun Are the Enemies

California wind is regional and it is the whole story for any fabric structure. Santa Ana and Diablo events push 40-70 mph gusts through the foothills and passes every fall. Coastal afternoons run 15-25 mph from the same direction every day, which is what loosens straps and wears grommets. The Central Valley gets the big winter storms. None of it is a problem for a shelter that is anchored to the ground with augers or concrete anchors and strapped tight; all of it is a problem for one held down by the four stakes in the box.

Sun is the slower killer. A 7.5 oz polyethylene cover goes chalky and brittle in three California summers. A 21.5 oz PVC cover holds up eight to ten years. On a shelter you plan to keep, the cover upgrade pays for itself twice.

Size and Clearance

Full-size truck12x208 ft
Boat on trailer, under 20 ft12x248-9 ft
Class B RV or lifted truck13x28 or 14x3210-12 ft

Measure the tallest point with the roof rack or tower up, add a foot, and buy that door height. Buyers undersize the door more than anything else.

Base and Anchoring

  • Gravel or dirt: 30-inch auger anchors on every leg, gravel raked level. This is the normal install.
  • Concrete or asphalt: wedge anchors into concrete; for asphalt use a base plate with spikes and add weight tubes.
  • Slope: over 2 inches of fall across the footprint means a gravel pad first. Frames racked on a slope wear at every joint.
  • Fire clearance: in a wildland interface zone keep any fabric structure 10 feet from the house and 5 feet from a fence line, and clear dry grass under it.

Permit Reality in California

The 120 square foot exemption for accessory structures is the line. A 10x12 is exempt almost everywhere. A 12x20 is 240 square feet and may need a permit as a temporary or accessory structure depending on the city, and coastal cities and hillside overlays are stricter. Many jurisdictions treat a fabric shelter as temporary if it has no foundation, but ask the planning counter with the exact model, because the answer varies street to street.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a portable garage last?

Two to four years on a polyethylene cover, eight to ten on a PVC cover, if the frame is anchored and the cover is kept tight. Frames outlast covers when they are not racked.

Do I need a permit for a portable garage in California?

Under 120 square feet, almost never. Larger units may be treated as accessory structures; ask the city with the model number before buying.

Can it go on a driveway?

Yes, with concrete wedge anchors or spiked base plates on asphalt. Check that your city allows a structure in the front setback first.

Is a portable garage safe in wildfire zones?

Fabric is not fire resistant. Keep 10 feet from the house, clear vegetation under it, and take the cover down during a red-flag evacuation warning.

Can you set it up?

Yes. Two-person assembly, anchoring and tensioning is standard handyman scope across all of California.
