TL;DR

A modular sectional is the only big sofa that reliably fits through a 30 inch door, up a stairwell, or into an elevator, because it arrives as individual seat boxes. The trade-off is assembly: connectors, legs, and cushions for every module. These are the ones our furniture assembly crews put together most, what to measure first, and what the build involves.

The call we get most often about sofas is not "assemble this." It is "it will not fit." A one-piece 100 inch sofa does not go around a hallway corner or into a second-floor apartment. A modular sectional does, which is why they have taken over the furniture assembly side of our schedule. Here is what we see on the job.

Our Picks

Best Overall

HONBAY Modular Sectional Sofa
The modular sectional we assemble most. Every seat is its own box, connectors are metal, and the modules can be rearranged into an L, a U, or two sofas. Covers are not removable, so pick the color carefully.

Belffin Modular Sectional Sleeper
Modules that convert into a sleeping surface for guests. More hardware than a fixed sectional, but a real second bed in a small home.

LINSY HOME Modular Sectional Sofa
Boxed modules like the HONBAY at a lower price, with a reversible chaise. Thinner cushions, so it suits a den or rental more than a main living room.

Why Modular Wins on Delivery Day

A fixed sectional ships as two or three long pieces, often 90 inches or more. Boxed modular sets ship as individual seats, chaises and corners, each 35 to 40 inches on a side. That is the difference between a sofa that goes up the stairs and one that goes back on the truck. It also means a module that gets stained or broken can be replaced without buying a new couch.

Measure and Check Before You Buy

  • Every doorway and turn on the path. Measure the narrowest door (many interior doors are 28 to 30 inches), the hallway width, and the stair turn. Compare to the box dimensions in the listing, not the assembled sofa.
  • The wall. Assembled length along the wall, plus 3 inches for a power cord if any module reclines or charges.
  • Depth. Modular seats run 35 to 42 inches deep. Deep seats are great to lounge in and terrible for anyone under 5 ft 6 in to sit upright on. Sit on something that deep before you commit.
  • Floor. Legs on hardwood need felt pads; on carpet, the modules drift apart unless the connectors are tight.
  • Box weights. 50 to 90 lb each. Five to seven boxes. Plan for two people to carry them in.

Install Difficulty, From the Crew

Easy work, done right. A five-module set is 60 to 90 minutes for one pro: unbox, screw on legs, set modules in the layout, attach the connectors underneath, place cushions, and haul the cardboard out. The mistakes are tightening the connectors before the modules are pushed together (gaps forever) and skipping the back supports on sets that have them (backs that lean). Sleeper modules add 30 minutes.

Furniture assembly starts at $60 in our price book. Sectionals are quoted by module count, and we take the boxes away. See furniture assembly, book online, or send a quote request with photos.

Fabric in a House With Kids and Dogs

Performance polyester and chenille clean up well and do not pill. Linen looks great in the listing and shows every mark. Removable covers (CHITA has them) are worth the price difference if anything under four feet tall lives in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a modular sectional fit through a 30 inch door?

Almost always. Individual modules are boxed at 35 to 40 inches on a side and go through on their edge. Check the box dimensions in the listing against your narrowest door.

How long does sectional assembly take?

An hour to an hour and a half for a five-module set. Sleeper modules add about 30 minutes.

Do the modules come apart over time?

Only if the connectors were tightened before the modules were pushed flush. Done right, they stay put on hard floors and carpet.

Is assembly included when I buy on Amazon?

Usually not. The boxes are left at the door. Our furniture assembly starts at $60 and includes cardboard removal.

Can I add modules later?

With HONBAY, CHITA, Belffin and LINSY, yes, as long as the fabric is still sold. Buy the extra module at the same time if the color matters to you.
