Best Closet System Kits (2026): Reach-In and Walk-In Organizers We Install, and How to Measure the Closet
Closet system kits come in two families: track systems that hang from one level rail (ClosetMaid ShelfTrack, Rubbermaid Configurations, Easy Track) and tower systems that stand on the floor (ClosetMaid SuiteSymphony, John Louis Home). Track systems are faster and forgiving; towers look more built-in. These are the kits our closet installation crews put in most, and the measurements that decide which one fits.
A closet kit succeeds or fails on one line: the top rail. If it is level and in the studs, everything below it hangs true and holds weight for years. If it is not, every shelf leans. We install these across California as a listed closet service, and this guide is the pre-purchase checklist we wish every customer had before the box arrived.

Our Picks
Track, Tower or Standards
Track (hang rail): one rail at the top, lagged into studs. Everything hangs from it and adjusts. Fast, strong, and the system we recommend for anyone who may rearrange later.
Tower: floor-standing cabinet units with drawers, joined by rods and shelves. Looks custom. Needs a level floor and more time to assemble, and towers are harder to move once drawers are loaded.
Fixed standards (John Louis, some ClosetMaid): vertical standards screwed to the wall, brackets clip in. Strong and simple, less adjustable than a hang rail.
Measure and Check Before You Buy
- Width at the back wall, at three heights. Closets are rarely square; use the smallest number and buy a kit whose range covers it.
- Depth. A standard reach-in is 24 inches deep. Hanging clothes need 22 to 24 inches; anything shallower means shelves only.
- Height. For double-hang, the top rod goes at 80 to 84 inches and the bottom at 40 to 42. Long-hang (dresses, coats) needs 66 inches clear below the rod. An 8 ft ceiling fits all of it; a low closet in an older home may not.
- Door opening. Bifold and sliding doors limit what you can reach. Towers and drawers behind a sliding door that covers half the closet are a daily annoyance.
- Walls. Find the studs; the hang rail or standards must hit at least two. Plaster and lath, or drywall over a block wall, change the fasteners.
- Baseboard and existing shelf. The old wire shelf and cleat come out first, and the holes get patched. Towers may need the baseboard notched or a spacer.
Install Difficulty, From the Crew
A reach-in track kit is a two to three hour job for one pro: remove the old shelf and cleats, patch and sand, find studs, set the rail dead level, hang the standards, cut shelves and rods to width, hang the brackets, load test. Tower kits are longer: an hour or two of cabinet assembly before anything goes on the wall, then leveling the towers to each other on a floor that is never flat. Walk-in closets are a day.
Closet installs are quoted per closet from photos and the kit you chose. See closet installation, book online, or send a quote request with photos.
Wire or Laminate
Wire shelving is cheaper, lighter, and sweaters sag through it. Laminate looks finished and holds folded clothes flat. For a kids' closet or a linen closet, wire is fine. For a primary closet you look at every morning, laminate is worth the difference.

What is the best closet system for a standard reach-in?
A track kit that covers the width: ClosetMaid ShelfTrack for wire, Easy Track for laminate. One level rail into studs and everything else adjusts.
How high should closet rods be?
Double-hang: top rod at 80 to 84 inches, bottom at 40 to 42. Single long-hang rod at 66 to 72 inches.
Can closet systems go into drywall without studs?
The hang rail or standards should hit at least two studs. Where they cannot, we use heavy-duty toggle anchors rated for the load, but studs are the answer.
How long does closet installation take?
Two to three hours for a reach-in track kit. Tower kits and walk-ins run half a day to a full day.
Do you remove the old shelf?
Yes. The old wire shelf and cleats come out and the holes are patched before the new system goes in.
